Word tonight (from various sources) that three Edmonton Oilers have filed for salary arbitration; Jeff Deslauriers, Gilbert Brule and JF Jacques.
Brule established himself with a 17-goal season; Deslauriers played in 48 games and survived in front of a very bad hockey club; JF Jacques’ filing brings new meaning to the word "gumption."
One of the big stories this summer for Oiler fans will be Brule’s contract. Should the club manage a reasonable contract, Brule has a good chance to be one of the members of the "Department of Youth" group up front that will include Taylor Hall, Magnus Paarjavi-Svensson, Jordan Eberle, Sam Gagner and others.
If the contract is too dear, chances are the Oilers will find a way to offload him. History tells us"arbitration filing" is often followed by a trade for Edmonton Oilers players.
JFJ!?
Really?
Wheres David S with a face palm when you need him…
Right here buddy…

Hmmm…
Brule – Understandable
JDD – He was asked to step up and if he is to stick it out for one more year in Edmonton, it may be reasonable.
JFJ… WTF is he thinking….Arbitration probably would lead to a pay cut if it were possible. He’s been on the gravy train since he singed. Has not done much to warrant a larger raise. I see Steve walking away from any contract he gets….and voila…there goes his NHL career.
I guess all that time Quinn gave jfj on the first line has gone to his head
Brule should get an offer before it goes to a hearing, maybe even JDD. If I were the Oilers I’d try to sell tickets to the JFJ hearing. It would be hilarious to hear him try and justify a raise. Maybe he brought coffee every morning to the rehab room.
Depending on the state of his back, JFJ might just be trying to guarantee himself a contract at all … any contract.
If that were true he would have just taken the qualifying offer, which I assume is a modest raise (I believe 5% is required) for a year. But someone please correct me if I’m wrong.
Fair point. Okay, I’ve got nothing on his motivation then.
That shows that Jaques looks like he only cares about money, and not just playing hockey.
One of the things that should help Jacques are all those glowing things ST said about him at the end of season PC. He kept saying “Jacques” over and over. Bet he said it 4 times.
That’s the scary part. Honestly, HE’S your favorite player Tambo? Aye Carumba*
*goes back in time 15 years and gets a round of applause for that reference.
The good news — JFJ gets an arbitration award now, so the Oilers can “walk away” as a mulligan for the stupidity of qualifying him in the first place.
I hope so…Can we just do that whole draft over again? Okay, okay…I’ll just drop it!
JFJ almost certianly won’t get a big enough arbitration award for the Oilers to walk away – see Article 12.10 of the CBA for details.
It’s all part of the negotiating dance. Both Brule and JDD will get signed before the hearing for fair contracts. But JFJ…that’s a head scratcher. Maybe Tambi puffed him up a bit during the exit interview this year…
You would think that Jacques’ agent would be smarter than this even if JF is not. Gives the Oilers an out to release him.
You would also think that Souray’s agent would not have let him shoot his mouth off to Spector.
JFJ = Ballsy
Yea..but does this open up the 2nd window for buyouts?
Jeff G: I really wonder about the Jacques filing. He has some injury concerns and the organization clearly feels a need to have a player in that “bang and crash” role. But the filing (based on numbers) is curious.
He does have a strong case based on management’s verbal, but he’ll get killed by the numbers.
JFJ is freaken kidding us right? OMG, if I was GM for a day I would have show that french a$$wipe the door last year…
This is how JFJ’s hearing will go.
Tambellini: JFJ is a dominant player…in the AHL. He can’t stay healthy for more than 1 game in a row and it took until his 8th year of pro hockey to score his first goal. He deserves the league minimum.
JFJ: But what about all of those wonderful things you said about me at the end of the year?
Tambellini: You believed that? I also said Khabibulin was our MVP….but seriously you are pretty big and awesome.
JFJ: I knew it!
Arbitrator: How about 3 year/9 million?
Tambellini: Done!
Lowetide, do you really think Brule would get so much that Tambo would offload him? If I’m not mistaken, we’ve got buttloads of cap space at the moment and it seems like a big mistake to let Brule go when he’s just starting to show his top-6 draft pedigree.
What’s the most the arbitrator would give Brule, 2.5M? I couldn’t see 3M…
Brule’s in a danger area because the club is going to start spending serious dollars this year or next on Gagner. The Oilers in a couple of seasons will (hopefully) be in a situation similar to that of the current LA Kings.
Kings have several young players they’ll need to sign long term (Doughty, etc) and that is the focus.
Tambellini’s summer could go sideways in a hurry if Brule gets a big contract (either by arbitration of signing).
Contracts awarded by arbitration are typically short-term though, no?
I am reasonably confident that the max length on an arbitrated contract is 2 years. Most seem to be just 1 year.
JFJ makes no sense to me…
Maybe JFJ isn’t being “ballsy”…Maybe the Crazy Train doesn’t see a place for himself on this team now that some real hockey players are starting to arrive from the pipeline.
Could he really be clever enough to be pushing the “move me” button?
You mean there is an easier roster to crack than the Oilers?
Does anyone know who JFJ’s agent is?
To me this signifies nothing only that he has an agent who convinced him he could get more money.
