With all the draft news last week, the sunshine was bumped to Sunday, but thank you to all those who made it our most read content on Sunday! No doubt that the brightness that is Kailer Yamamoto had everyone checking-in. This week’s sunshine only had a chance to shine with the big club for a short time but in that limited exposure, he gave us a big reason to be excited. Slap on that smooth listening theme song and lock in because this week’s Saturday Sunshine is, Ty Rattie.
As I alluded to in my opening, Rattie was not given much time with the big club this year as he hadn’t really proven to be much of a performer with any of his time with the Blues (and a five-game stint with the Hurricanes). The year before signing with the Oilers Ty had seen four total games of NHL action before he was placed on waivers and picked up by Carolina. The Hurricanes would give him a month with the big club and five total games (with two assists) before placing him on waivers and finding himself once again picked up by the Blues where he was immediately placed into the AHL. He would finish out his season with the Chicago Wolves and garner five points in 22 games.

Enter the Edmonton Oilers and the wily signing of Rattie to a one-year two-way contract of the 24-year old, former 32nd overall pick with no much downside to it. He was unable to make the line-up out of camp (not many were planning on him being around to start the year at least) and was assigned to Bakersfield. This was just the chance that Rattie needed to take the time to round out his game.
Rattie would absolutely take the ball and run with it in Bakersfield. In his 53 total games, he would register 43 points with 21 goals and 22 assists. He was named to the AHL Pacific All-Star team and he ended up finishing the season with three points less than Josh Currie for the team scoring lead (in 15 fewer games). His time in the A would come to an abrupt end when the Oilers would call him up for the second, and final time last year.
This is the real reason to be positive for this player. At age 25 now he will be slotted in as a top-6 winger on a cap ceiling team at just $800,000 dollars in salary cap space. The Oilers need more of those type of deals for players who can hang with the McNuge and Draisaitl’s of the world. In his second brief stint with the Oilers, just twelve total games, Rattie would rack up nine points, five of which were goals. He would find himself on the top line with the newly minted McNuge and they would create magic over the end of the season.
The very thought of the three of them together for a full season with a training camp/preseason full of chemistry has this blogger drooling. When you couple that with the fact that he will be a winger making a fraction of others in the organization,
Ty Rattie is definitely a positive.
I keep seeing articles here about finding a hidden gem in the UFA tomorrow. Perhaps we have already found one! Here’s hoping that, that trio find success all year. What a bonus it would be for a strapped salary cap team.
I would be hesitant to declare him slotted with anyone yet as he has shown flashes at the NHL level but little consistency. I hope he is spending this summer training. He has an incredible opportunity ahead of him.
Rattie was one of the few bright spots on the team last year. His contract is value whether he makes the team or not, after training camp. The Oil need many more contracts like this. Hopefully Rattie can live up to the lofty expectations of playing with the worlds best player and find a home. If he can play as well as he did at the end of last season, I expect that the team will have found a gem. Although it took many years for him to develop, I do believe he has arrived. I am happy for him and the team. Godspeed Ty.
Not much love from me for Ty. Sure it would be nice if he fit nicely on that top line but reality is he came up while McDavid was doing his best atlas impersonation. My hope is Yamamoto kills it in training camp and lands that spot.
I just hope the coaches dont have to take him off the topline because he cant handle it there.
I am hoping that Rattie is able to play consistently on the McNuge line. I keep thinking that if McDavid and Rattie develop strong chemistry, that maybe Nuge can be dropped down to left-wing on Draisaitl’s line. I really don’t think Lucic is up to the task after what I saw last year.
