Now that the GM search is behind us, we move forward to operation: Find a Coach 2019. Elliotte Friedman spoke on Sportsnet 960 in Calgary this morning to give his take on Dave Tippett’s situation.
“I’ve reported and heard that Dave Tippett was a very high contender [in Edmonton]. I think he could potentially still be in the mix in Buffalo too.”
It’s been no secret that Tippett is likely on Ken Holland’s coaching list. Tippet parted ways as the Arizona Coyotes head coach in 2017 and has been on the market ever since.
“I would say he’s probably getting one of those two jobs.”
As said by Bob Stauffer on Wednesday, other coaches that may be on Ken Hollands list include Jay Woodcroft, Trent Yawney, Glen Gulutzan, Lane Lambert, and Todd Nelson. If you ask me there are a lot of decent options to pick from out of the pile. I personally don’t know how well Tippett would fit here in Edmonton.
With Buffalo and Edmonton both being on the shortlist for Dave Tippett, I’m very curious who would want him more, and to see how this all shakes down in the end. Could you see Tippett finding success with the Edmonton Oilers? Let me know in the comments.

Nelson is my fist choice, then tippet
Mine too. I think Nelson could do wonders for the younger players, not sure he wants to come back though. He’s getting an HC job somewhere. It’s up to the OBC though, let’s be honest.
Nice conspiracy theory but the OBC will have nothing to do with it. Get over it already.
Absolutely get over it. Biatch
Let us see who is sitting at the draft table this year. That is a good indicator of who was a voice in the organization.
That will be the proof for sure. Even better they won’t even be in the building.
todd please
Pass.
Tippett….Nooooooo! Boring defensive hockey stifling McDavids creativity and skill even more than it already has been.
Todd all the way
anybody but him
A terrible pick. Hitch 2.0. Outdated hockey. This is the exact blue print for failure as last time. The Oilers are determined to continue the slow death spiral.
I’m doubtful it’s Tippett. No real reason I just don’t feel he would be a real fit and think Holland will see that. I like think Nelson has a good chance and a good choice. Plus there is a Detroit connection. That hire would give me confidence that Holland is not being influenced by the No brain trust of old. since they have passed on Todd once already for likes of eakins
Nelson for me hands down.
Hard pass on Woodcroft & Gulutzan.. need a bigger shakeup than either of those guys would amount to
You do realize Woodcroft led the most successful campaign in Condors history. Plus if the timing is right, a lot of those young guns coming up here would already have a familiar face to look to when playing for Edmonton. I’m not saying give it to him today, but if the future demands it, Woodcroft has my vote as Oilers HC
it will be nelson i pray
Bring Back, Dallas Eaikin’s. Chop Wood, Carry Water…
“Pass the Doghnut’s Dallas” he was a beauty!!
I’d be mate than okay with Tippet.
More than…
Dave Tippett is basically the definition of mediocrity when it comes to NHL coaching. He’s never really gonna blow it, but has also never demonstrated he’s capable of getting an NHL team over the hump. Can’t wait for the Oilers to sign him to too much money and everyone in the Edmonton media pretend this is on par with hiring someone like Quenneville or any other actual top tier coach.
I hope I’m wrong and they go with Todd Nelson. He never really got a fair shake here, but I understand why. His timing couldn’t have been worse – coaching the garbage time of a lost season, an inevitable new regime coming in because they got Connor McDavid, and a management team that wanted to bring in their own coaching staff. He’s proven pretty consistently in the AHL he’s a very good head coach, and I’d honestly like to see what he could do at the NHL level.
Hey I got an idea whenever somebody mentions the OBC , we all drink…man I would be drunk for months.
Why are Oiler fans always stuck on bringing back the past? If Nelson didn’t succeed here before, what makes you think it would be better now? Did the Oilers fire him? Would he even come back at all?
What qualities does Nelson have that would right this ship?
Kruger to Buffalo.
