Last night, the Edmonton Oilers tweeted that Connor McDavid’s rehabilitation protocol would begin immediately as he starts his recovery from the injury he suffered last Saturday in Calgary. The good news is that we already know his leg wasn’t broken. The problem? They didn’t tell us anything about what actually happened.
UPDATE: The #Oilers medical staff, in collaboration with top orthopedic specialists, have determined a rehabilitation protocol for Connor McDavid, which will begin immediately.

For an organization that, just last week, had Bob Nicholson say to a room full of reporters that they were going to be more open and honest with their fanbase, this wasn’t a very good start. You’d think that providing an update on how Connor McDavid is doing would be a softball down Broadway that they could have easily smashed out of the park, but instead, we got more of the same nothingness in terms of actual information. I know teams like to keep injury news secret during the season, but the Oilers are done for the next six months so I don’t understand the reluctance to provide an update. Then again, maybe Nicholson’s promise of transparency hasn’t been formally typed up yet? Maybe the OEG is out of company letterhead and he wasn’t able to let the people know that they’re supposed to share information these days. SOMEBODY GET BOB’S MEMO TO THE SOCIAL TEAM!
McDavid has small tear in his PCL that won’t require surgery. I would have just added that to the press release yesterday. #Oilers

Fortunately, Jason Gregor hooked us up with an actual update this morning when he tweeted that McDavid has suffered a small PCL tear that will not require surgery. Unfortunately, we don’t know what grade of a tear Connor has or if there are any surrounding issues in his knee, so we’ll have to go with the little information we’ve been given and hope for the best. I know that some folks were concerned this week when it was revealed on Sportsnet that the Oilers were looking for second and third opinions on McDavid’s leg, an understandable reaction given the importance of the player to this team, but for me, that was just good business. This is the franchise player we’re talking about here and I would assume that the Oilers would have taken Connor to see Tony Stark if it was possible. No matter what it takes, just get this right and get the man healthy.
But what does a PCL do exactly? Doctor Baggedmilk dove into the Internet to find out:
The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is a ligament within the knee. Ligaments are tough bands of tissue that connect bones.
The PCL — similar to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) — connects the thigh bone (femur) to your shin bone (tibia). Although it is larger and stronger than the ACL, the PCL can be torn.
PCL tears make up less than 20% of injuries to knee ligaments. Injuries that tear the PCL often damage some of the other ligaments or cartilage in the knee, as well. In some cases, the ligament can also break loose a piece of underlying bone. Causes of PCL Injuries
PCL injuries are often due to a blow to the knee while it’s bent or shin. Common causes include:
- Striking the knee against the dashboard during an auto accident
- Falling on the knee while it’s bent
Seeing as Connor flew into the post at 1000 miles per hour, I think it’s almost the best case scenario that his leg was not broken and that he doesn’t need surgery to repair the damage. If there’s any good news at all about the Oilers not making the playoffs it’s that the extended offseason will provide Connor with the time he needs to fully recover before rolling back into town for training camp and the start of his revenge tour. It goes without saying that McDavid is the team’s best player and I hope that whatever protocol the Oilers have in place for him provides him with what he needs to make a full recovery.
Gord speed, Connor.

Good news.
Yes, Gio for the Norris … !
My only question is what’s the prognosis for a 100% recovery.? We still don’t know everything.
I can confirm that his knee bone is connected to his leg bone
Well sucks that McDavid’s summer will be comprised of rehab for the next couple months, but it could have been worse, lets just hope it heals properly and he has no setbacks…
Amen.
Well when you are 20 minutes from summer in a mean nothing game and you go balls to the wall trying to take the Norris Winner wide, you just might run into something like this. Things happen
At least it wasn’t worse, it sure could have been
Shut your cakehole, Flamer!
Back to make fun of McDavid’s injury,, loser
I am disappointed about the injury. More disappointed how his team mates didn’t respond. Lucic isn’t a goal scorer anymore, but for 6 mill he could have done something, anything!
Lucic wasn’t even playing that night., it was a weird game and I live in Calgary , I am so sick of hearing what was Conner doing in a nothing game. Well he was making the Norris trophy winner look like a pylon and Giordano made a hockey play but was penalized. I don’t wish injury on anyone but it would of been interesting if Smith was injured on the play.
Well if he thought Gio was just going to let him steam into our goaltender before the playoffs I guess he was in for a surprise wasn’t he. Because that wasn’t ever going to fly with The Captain
People. You cant do that anymore in the NHL. Did you not follow the McSorely case? You will end up in court so fast. You have to think of your career and your family. You just cant retaliate like that anymore, its just the way it is. NHL needs to enforce penalties for taking someone off balance near the end boards with anything but the shoulder. Automatic 10 games. Your are going 30-40kph 10ft from a wall and you have people taking your feet out from behind and getting 2 minutes. Its a joke.
Don’t worry , there will be ample opportunity to even the score with a hard hit- a hockey play! He should be the main target of every Flame Oiler game.
You don’t get Norris consideration in this league letting any player go wide on you without doing everything possible to stop him … certainly it was a hockey play & very happy Smitty wasn’t injured …
He was beat cleanly like a pylon and took out the skates from behind. That does not belong in the game, its more dangerous that boarding. We dont see that play that often because McDavid is the only player who can make every one of the best defenseman in the world feel like they are in their first year of junior.
He beat an elite D man like he had not been beaten since Juinor. And that elite player then had to slide on his stomach and take out his skates 10 ft from the end boards.
Gravis, you’re being a tad over dramatic, yes … reminiscent of that chickie that went all drama queen in that Valley Girl movie actually …
Hmmmm. Mcdavid career shortened by years. Get a grip. Knee injuries like this are as serious as it gets
He’s never won the Norris – league has noted his dirty play – “Gio-apologizer”. Edmonton sports writers should make sure and not to vote for this bonehead. Hangs around like an idiot when he’s not wanted after causing the accident. Loserass.
That dirty take out probably cost gio the Norris, and rightfully so.
It was a dirty play by Gioardano. He targeted the knee, not the puck. Watch the replay.
Really? Conner sa
Really? Conner said it wasn’t a dirty play and I’d think he would know. But if that doesn’t fit your agenda and you know better than he does..
Shouldn’t you save some of that air for your inflatable girlfriend for date night tonight, then at least you will have a shoulder to cry on when your Lamers lose
Good one. Another gem from Dallas’s Pubic Hair
funny
Isn’t there enough Flames articles- beat it! Come here to gloat – karma will come back pinhead.
SUCH jealousy in your comments, Dallas … LOVE that … never change, hey … 🙂
Oh yeah… so jealous…lol… but its good to see your Lamers buddys here, you guys can start a support group for when your Lamers go to another first round exit…
Conner would never say a bad thing about anyone.
How can you say that he targeted the knee? He was flat on the ice and so was his stick
Sure it was Mr delusional. Mcdavid had Gio’s stick in his hands controlling where that stick was going and it wound up in his own feet. try looking at the replay with out your pylon colored glasses.
^who has the rose colored glasses on?
Lol
Come on, I hate the Fames but the play is moving at 100 mph. Gio was just trying to get the puck.
You get the puck but in order to do it you have to take a guy out at 40k by the boards. You can’t get the puck that way I’m sorry. It’s too dangerous. This is on the league
Ya, he’s been known to target knees!
Nothing will change in management, the OBC or this losing culture until fans stop supporting this continuing trend of secrecy, stupidity and arrogance. Stop going to games and buying tickets and enough with it’s just to see Connor. He’ll be gone soon if competent individuals aren’t brought in to replace the hockey inept Nicholson, MacT, Howson etc. Anybody that thinks Nicholson can find the right GM, coach or whoever they want to sacrifice for their lack of success, hockey knowledge, basic life skills is fooling themselves. Look at the playoff teams in just the first round, this team isn’t even close. And good luck offloading this contracts like Lucic, Russell, Sekera, Manning etc. No team has hired PC so next season is already in the toilet.
Lol @ Bobby “Overpriced” Burgers transparency with fans.
I’m just here to watch these guys implode now. If they can’t send out a proper tweet about the most important player not only on this team but the league then this team is more screwed then I thought. They can’t run a multi million franchise right so I’m not surprised they can’t run a Twitter account either. We knew it was a leg injury, quit dancing around the subject.
Poor Connor.
I see that useless Eberle fellow scored again last night. Going into the blue paint. Even throwing fist in a scrum. I’m sure glad the coaches didn’t know how to get that out of him here. (:
It’s a contract year.
sure but Ebs put up very pedestrian numbers this year, getting just 19 goals and 37 points. i’d rather pay a better player big bucks as a UFA than what Ebs will ask for! RW Brett Connolly is a name i have heard bandied about as a player the Oilers are interested in.
He is on a deep team for the first time in his career.
Ebs is great. Hope the best for that guy. Good to see him scoring in the playoffs.
I was curious to see how Eberle performed in the playoffs this year. After getting traded and reading the press maybe he matured into a more complete player who competes harder than in the past.
Or maybe the playoffs with the Oilers was a ridiculously small sample size that meant absolutely nothing in the scheme of things. On the other side my understanding is that after a thorough review of all players in the history of hockey, Oiler fans and management realized that Jordan Eberle was the first player in that history to be surprised by the ramped up speed and intensity of his first playoff games and as a result didn’t perform to his regular standards. For that reason they felt better turning him to the ghost of Sam Gagner.
What you are saying may be plausible except for his play during the rest of the year pretty much matched what everyone is saying about him. I think that Ebs (and Hall) after being the poster boy and handed the world found out a bit about life after getting traded and had their eyes opened.
Ouch! That is a nasty end to his best season so far. I hope he and Jesse can both come back healthy and have their NEW best season yet.
Hope he hits the beach for a few weeks and takes a well deserved rest. You can trust the guy will work at being in top shape for camp.Hope the Funky Finn got the sasme memo.{ porbably back home home eating fried sardines[
Sarcasm and humor all at once! Love it!
I can see Jesse hanging around for the Oil Kings run. That boy is wired a little different but loves his hockey. I sure hope he stays and figures it out here and not some where else.
I would love to see Connor take Jesse aside and say “your my training partner and you have to keep up”. Someone needs to teach Jesse how to prepare
thanx Jason for providing us all with the info on McDavid that Nicholson should have provided ! #fireNicholson #Nicholsonispartoftheproblem
would have hurt season ticket sales
ya i’m sure that’s it….
We’ll see in 3 months how well he will be doing ?
Terrible news, a tear is the worst, especially the pcl. The way McDavid plays he will tear it within a month into the season and then will be out for the season. Not good
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6169976/
I tore my PCL in a skiing wipeout in ’93. I needed surgery as it was over 75% tore and ripped cartilage and ligaments. Docs said of all three ACL, MCL, and PCL that PCL was the rarest and therefore least studied. My knee has never been the same. I think it’s a positive if he doesn’t need surgery, but I bet there is still great risk of it never being the same again.
Thankfully a whole hell of a lot has changed in ortho since 93
Can the oiler management get any worse? Can these guys get any dumber? U know a lot of your fans have lost faith in you, the media is waiting for u to mess up to keep laughing at you, and you just promised transparency.. And then this… That’s why when the question is asked do they need a POHO the answer is hell yeah… And this is also why if come mid may they tell us well we looked everywhere and determined K. G. was our best option for GM then it will all have been a charade all along…
They are out of touch with reality. What they think is normal is not.
What are you rambling on about?
Glad to hear it is minor, nobody cut scummy idiot lowlife losers wish injury on anyone
Are you stuttering – go away and don’t come back.
Glad to hear it is minor, nobody but scummy idiot lowlife losers wish injury on anyone
Agreed, classless on both sides. See Oilers fans do it about Calgary, and the other way around.
Those people are the ones you dont want to be around in real life.
Grade 1 tear should be ready to continue sports by 12 weeks , or earlier between 9-12 weeks . Sounds like it is only a grade 1 tear and thus little to no other damage has been found .
a slight tear that will heal on it’s own shouldn’t effect his skating ability at all, for all the doom and gloomers out there who might say….”he’ll never be the same again !!!!”….
@Gregor
I like the no-tie in the twitter pic. Open collar. Not everyone can pull that off. Nice.
Anyways, back to watching Flames playoff hockey pregame interviews!
Have a swell day, guys 🙂
Just curious, what became of flamenation? I’m guessing it was mothballed due to lack of interest. Can’t see any other reason all these clown flame fans are here on the day of a flame playoff game.
We got some down time in between games. Came here to hang out with our pals.
We’re not your pals!
Yeah, you are the guys wearing a Ferrari jacket that dont own one.
Kick sand back to your own site you… this year good tool bags. Lol
I cant believe you guys gotta listen to cassie Campbell.
She makes listening to drew music on the ears.
I was trying to watch the first game but had to have my thumb on the mute button at ready at all times. Crazy brutal.
Flames lose tonight to the worst team in the playoffs . Karma for these clowns rubbing salt on Connors injury concerns?
Easy there captain karma.. it’s called hockey.
You don’t like the word karma? OK
What a wonderful coincidence that on a day when news of the severity of the injury of the best hockey player in the world is mocked by flame fans, their team is beaten by a team with the second best player.
Better?
Better. The good guys won last night.
