Oilersnation trade deadline round table: Breaking down your Edmonton Oilers trade proposals

Welcome to the Oilersnation trade deadline roundtable! Myself, Jason Gregor, Robin Brownlee, Cam Lewis, Tyler Yaremchuk and BaggedMilk took your questions on what trades you would make if you were the Edmonton Oilers.

And today, we’ve tied them all up as we sit days from the trade deadline.

1) @russ99a proposes the Oilers trade Jesse Puljujarvi, Dmitri Samorukov and a future 3rd round pick to the Boston Bruins for goaltender Jeremy Swayman and Jake DeBrusk.

Cam Lewis:

That’s a no from the Oilers, in my opinion. I thought hard about it because Swayman is a good young goaltender but losing Puljujarvi is a big shot to Edmonton’s depth on the right side. If this were Kailer Yamamoto, it would be a yes. Another thing to mention is that I’m not a fan of trading for DeBrusk because he has a big qualifying offer this off-season and he might not be worth the cash.

Robin Brownlee:

I can’t see the Bruins making Swayman available because he looks like their starter for the next 12-15 years, but if they did I’d be all over this in the deal you’re suggesting even with Puljujarvi as part of the ask. With DeBrusk having asked for a trade I might even squeeze a little harder — offer a lower draft pick — but I’d make the deal as you have it.

Jason Gregor:

Boston won’t trade a goalie without getting one in return and they really like young Swayman. Also, Edmonton couldn’t afford this trade due to no cap space. I’d say zero chance this trade occurs.

Tyler Yaremchuk:

This is an interesting proposal. The Oilers would hypothetically get a guy capable of being their number one goalie for a long time and a young forward with definite top-six potential. It’s hard for me to say yes to this from the Oilers’ perspective just because I’m very high on Jesse Puljujarvi. Swap him for Yamamoto and upgrade the draft pick and maybe?

BaggedMilk:

I think that’s a heavy trade that favours the Bruins too much for my liking. While I do think Swayman has got some potential between the pipes, he’s only played a handful of games and is relatively unknown at the NHL level and that makes me nervous. For this trade to work, you’d need to know with some certainty that Swayman will be the guy. As for DeBrusk, I like the player a lot and am happy to see he’s bouncing back this season, but I’m not quite as sure about the upcoming deal he’ll get or the qualifying offer just to hold his rights.

Zach Laing:

If I’m the Oilers, I’m definitely passing. Jesse Puljujarvi is one of the best Oilers players in terms of driving play on both ends of the ice. Boston likes Swayman too, and I don’t see DeBrusk moving the needle for the Oilers.

2) @TyJamesTMJ proposes Edmonton trades Tyson Barrie, Phillip Broberg and a 2022 1st round pick to the Arizona Coyotes for defenceman Jakub Chychrun.

Cam Lewis:

I would be all over this but it isn’t enough for Arizona. Barrie isn’t worthwhile for them because they’re rebuilding and they can do better than Broberg and a first for Chychrun.

Robin Brownlee:

For me, the lower body injury that’s projected to keep Chychrun out two weeks makes this a non-starter at the deadline. If it’s two weeks from the announcement last Monday (March 14), that takes us near the end of the month — assuming he’s ready to play by then. With a move this significant, the injury makes pursuing Chychrun an off-season move when the prices go down.

Jason Gregor:

I like Chychrun, but he has missed 32 games, 29 games, 14 games and already 15 this season. Last season was the only year he didn’t miss any games. I wouldn’t trade a 1st and Broberg for him and Barrie, as they create a hole on the right side and you are giving up the one left D who can play the right side. I think a Barrie trade could happen in the off-season. This is a lot to give up for Chychrun. Too much for me.

Tyler Yaremchuk:

I think Arizona would want one more future piece. I’d be all over Chychrun if this was the deal though. I’m really starting to like Broberg, but you have to give good pieces to get good players and Chychrun would fit in perfectly on the Oilers.

BaggedMilk:

We’d need something back from the Coyotes over and above Chychrun for that kind of package, no? Seems like a lot to me but I say that having no idea what the hell I’m talking about.

Zach Laing:

I don’t think this would be enough for Arizona to pull the trigger, but I’d do this deal in a heartbeat. You’re trading someone who could be Chychrun, for Chychrun. I think he’s been a very underrated piece across the league and he has three years left on a deal paying him $4.6-million.

3) @sinfulchimp proposes the Oilers trade Tyson Barrie, Tyler Tulio, Mikko Koskinen and 1st round picks in 2022 and 2024 to the Anaheim Ducks for goaltender John Gibson and defenceman Hampus Lindholm.

Cam Lewis

This is a really interesting one. John Gibson would undoubtedly be a game-changer for the Oilers but I’m not sure I see a conservative general manager like Ken Holland dealing two first-round picks away at the same time, especially one a couple of years from now when you can’t predict where the team is going to be. If Gibson gets hurt, the Oilers are screwed. Maybe adding Xavier Borgault instead of the 2024 pick makes sense, but that feels pricey for the Oilers.

Robin Brownlee:

Even with Gibson having dropped off the past three seasons and Lindholm being a pending UFA coming off a $5.2 M AAV, I’d make this deal — if I can get an indication from Lindholm I can re-sign him. If he’s only a rental, I might still take a swing. Gibson has a lot of prime years left and is a .915 career guy even with a dip in performance since 2018-19.

Jason Gregor:

Interesting. Lindholm is a left D…and a pending UFA. What if he walks in the off-season? If you could re-sign him then if I was the Oilers I’d make that trade without hesitation. Gibson is a very good goalie with a solid cap hit. I do think ANA would want a young goalie as part of the package though.

Tyler Yaremchuk:

This isn’t even close to enough for the Ducks to move BOTH Gibson and Lindholm. They apparently want three pieces just for Lindholm at the deadline. Not happening.

BaggedMilk:

There is no way on Gord’s green earth that the Ducks are going to trade John Gibson on his own let alone with Lindholm, and especially not for that package.

Zach Laing:

Like Tyler mentioned, I don’t think this is enough to pry both of those assets loose. Edmonton would be all over it if they’d take this package, however.

4) @Arlen_29 proposes Edmonton trade a 2023 1st, Ilya Konovalov and Josh Archibald to the St. Louis Blues for Ville Husso.

Cam Lewis:

I worry about Husso because he’s come totally out of nowhere and his sample size of success is so small. Giving away Konovalov and Archibald isn’t an issue but that 2023 first is very valuable, more so than somebody who could be a flash in the pan.

Robin Brownlee:

Husso wouldn’t be my first or even second target as a goaltender, but he’s got nice numbers even if he’s a bit short on NHL experience. What does his UFA contract look like? Konovalov hasn’t shown much in Bakersfield. Sure, I’d take a long look at this deal.

Jason Gregor:

Blues won’t make this deal now. They are looking for a long playoff run and Husso has been very good for them. I could see Edmonton pursuing Husso this off-season, but he won’t be moved before the deadline.

Tyler Yaremchuk:

If this deal comes with a good extension for Husso, then maybe? But why wouldn’t you just wait until the summer and sign him for just money? That would make more sense. Trade a 3rd for Anton Forsberg, then sign Husso in July.

BaggedMilk:

Ville Husso isn’t even a real person. For real, though, he’s a UFA so no thank you.

Zach Laing:

As has been mentioned, I’m not sure what to make of Husso. He’s exploded onto the scene seemingly out of nowhere. Is he a one-hit-wonder? I’m not willing to risk a first in a deep 2023 draft.

5) @Michael74858055 proposes the Oilers trade Tyson Barrie in a one-for-one swap with the Seattle Kraken for defenceman Carson Soucy.

Cam Lewis:

That would be a no from Seattle because Barrie costs more. They’re losing salary cap flexibility for a lateral move.

Robin Brownlee:

I’m not sure Seattle would make this deal — they’d want an overpay for Soucy — but I’d jump at it. At 27, Soucy is in prime time and has another year left at $2.75M. Would file this as a big win for the Oilers based on need.

Jason Gregor:

Soucy is a left D… this creates a hole on the right side. This saves cap space and fills one hole on LD, but creates another on RD. I don’t think it improves the team overall.

Tyler Yaremchuk:

Seattle says no here. The Oilers would need to add a sweetener. I would throw in the 2023 second rounder. It may sound like a lot, but Soucy is a much better fit for the Oilers and this would save them almost $2m in cap space, which is worth a lot as well.

BaggedMilk:

I would do that. Let’s get weird, let’s get aggressive, let’s get different flavours of defencemen on the back end.

Zach Laing:

I’ve liked Soucy’s game a lot and I think he would fit well on Edmonton’s right-side. I’d do this deal yesterday if I could.

6) @BoPaulBaybee suggests the Oilers trade William Lagesson and a 2nd round pick in 2023 to the Montreal Canadiens for forward Mike Hoffman.

Cam Lewis:

I’m not a big fan of Hoffman because he’s been largely a power-play specialist over the years. The assets going to Montreal seem fair but I wouldn’t want to take on the entirety of Hoffman’s deal, which costs $4.5 million for two more years. Things are going to be tight here financially right away and Hoffman isn’t a great way to spend money.

Robin Brownlee:

Hoffman is a good player but he’s 32, makes $4.5M through 2023-24 and his production has waned since his best season in 2018-19. Pass.

Jason Gregor:

Hoffman has two more years at $4.5m. Oilers can’t afford his cap hit this year, and wouldn’t want it for the following few seasons. Would MTL eat 50% for two more years? Maybe, but I don’t see how Hoffman helps the Oilers big picture.

Tyler Yaremchuk:

Hoffman isn’t a good fit here. The Oilers don’t ned another scoring winger, their top six is full as it is. Save that second-round pick and use it on a defenseman.

BaggedMilk:

Mike Hoffman hasn’t been Mike Hoffman in a minute now and the $4.5 million price tag scares me. Pass.

Zach Laing:

Hoffman is a one-dimensional offensive player who isn’t even good at driving play offensively. All he is good for, really, is putting up offence and I’m willing to take the risk on him. He has two years left on his deal and is 32 years old. This screams James Neal 2.0.

7) @SeanTownley proposes the Oilers trade 1st round picks in 2022 and 2023, a 2023 2nd round pick, and Phillip Broberg to the Winnipeg Jets for Connor Hellebuyck and Adam Lowry.

Cam Lewis:

Oh man, this is a fun one. I’ll apply the same logic as I did before with the Anaheim trade. The value seems pretty reasonable as Hellebuyck is excellent and Lowry is very underrated as a third-line centre, but I just don’t see Holland unloading two firsts. Edmonton also needs to send some money back the other way for this to work and I’m not sure who it would involve and how it would work as those two players cost nearly $10 million combined against the cap.

Robin Brownlee:

In the name of win now, I make this deal in a heartbeat. Even with a slight drop in save percentage this season, Hellebuyck, 28, has lots of life left and gives you a Vezina caliber starter good for 55-65 games.

Jason Gregor:

Edmonton adds $9.4m in this deal. Impossible from a cap perspective. Also, Winnipeg isn’t trading away Hellebuyck, who has two years remaining, just for picks. The Jets would want much more for those two.

Tyler Yaremchuk:

I don’t think the Jets would trade Hellebuyck. Lowry is going to get at least second at the deadline so this boils down to two firsts and Broberg for Hellebuyck. Maybe the value is right, but this just isn’t super realistic.

BaggedMilk:

The math on this transaction would be enough to make Ken Holland’s ears bleed. The Oilers would need to clear out all kinds of space and I just don’t know that we have the management team that has the creativity to get something like this one.

Zach Laing:

I love wild proposals like this one. As Gregor mentioned, the money doesn’t line up so it would be impossible to pull off. Edmonton would have to add Zack Kassian or Tyson Barie, for example, to make the money work, but I would be all over this deal. I doubt Winnipeg would feel the same, however.

8) @farmergreene4 suggests the Oilers trade a 2022 1st round pick and Tyson Barrie to the Philadelphia Flyers for defenceman Travis Sanheim.

Cam Lewis:

The problem with the Barrie proposals is that people are treating him like an asset rather than a salary cap burden. This deal would be Philly giving up a good young defender for just a mid-first-round pick while also doing the Oilers a favour with Barrie. You’d have to add a prospect like Broberg to get the quality D-man back and to dump Barrie, unfortunately. If the Oilers are moving Barrie it would be a player in, player out hockey trade.

Robin Brownlee:

A lot of teams like Sanheim. Barrie is a throwaway guy here, so any trade involving a LD player in his prime as good as Sanheim makes sense.

Jason Gregor:

Similar cap hit, Sanheim has one year remaining while Barrie has two. I like Sanheim, but this adds a left and removes a righty. It doesn’t solve the RD issue and with Nurse, Keith and Sanheim the only room for Broberg next year is on RD. Sanheim is a better defender than Barrie, but for me this doesn’t solve Edmonton’s RD issue. I have no issue moving Barrie, but I wouldn’t do it for a LD, as that is the Oilers best organization strength right now.

Tyler Yaremchuk:

I like Sanheim, but I’m not sure if he’s a perfect fit here. Still, he’s better than Barrie and that might be enough for me to do this trade. It’s close but I think I’d do it. The salaries are even and Sanheim is a good piece.

BaggedMilk:

Nah, I think I’d rather keep the magic bean than include it in a package for Sanheim.

Zach Laing:

I have a hard time with imagining the Oilers being picky in any trade involving Tyson Barrie. Edmonton likely wants him off the cap and the Oilers should be able to find a 3RD for cheap in free agency, so if Philly feels this is enough to take on Barrie’s cap hit, then I’m all in.

9) @NovaCanuck proposes the Oilers trade a 1st round pick and Dylan Holloway to the Montreal Canadiens for defenceman Ben Charot, forward Artturi Lehkonen and goaltender Jake Allen, all at 50% retained salary.

*Note: Ben Chairot was traded to the Florida Panthers for 2023 1st round pick, 2022 4th round pick, prospect Ty Smilanic with MTL eating 50% of his salary. We’ll keep this one in for the sake of it.*

Cam Lewis:

I don’t love this one for the Oilers because I feel Holloway is ready to step in and fill that two-way role that Lehkonen plays. The first plus a contract going back the other way for Chiarot and Allen is more up my alley.

Robin Brownlee:

Allen is not on my radar as a top candidate in the crease. Not sure I’m willing to trade Holloway PLUS a first before I get a longer look at him. Tempting, but pass.

Jason Gregor:

Chiarot has been moved so won’t happen… but I’m bullish on Holloway. I think he is going to be really good. I wouldn’t have made this move for him and a 1st.

Tyler Yaremchuk:

No. Chiarot is a rental, Lehkonen is a middle-six winger, and Allen isn’t a bonafide upgrade on Koskinen. Not worth giving up on Holloway. Not even close.

BaggedMilk:

Chiarot gone. No mas. No bueno. Also, I think Holloway is going to be a stud so I’d rather keep him around.

Zach Laing:

I wouldn’t do this deal at all. I’m not sure why Chairot is/was such a hot commodity. He doesn’t drive play offensively and gets caved in defensively. This seems like a classic “he’s big” type of rental.

10) @DeanBillee suggests the Oilers trade Mike Smith, Slater Koekkoek, Olivier Rodrigue and a 2023 2nd round pick to the New York Rangers for goaltender Alexander Georgiev and defenceman Jarrod Tinordi.

Cam Lewis:

Georgiev has lost a lot of value over the past couple of years but I doubt the Rangers want to take on the burden of a 40-year-old goalie and a tweener defenceman count against their salary cap next year. I think just Rodrigue and the second-rounder might work. That said, I’m also not sure Georgiev is an upgrade on Stuart Skinner.

Robin Brownlee:

Trade moves out some players who aren’t in the Oilers’ plans, but is Georgiev the guy you bet on? Not me. His numbers have slipped a little bit each season. Not sold on him compared to some of the other goaltenders mentioned in previous questions. Pass.

Jason Gregor:

In a heartbeat I make this trade, but would the Rangers? They likely feel they could get more than a 2nd and a young goalie this summer. Doubt they’d want Smith, who has one year remaining on his deal.

Tyler Yaremchuk:

The value here is sort of close but I’m not sure why the Rangers would want Smith. Would have to take him out. I’m not sold on Georgiev as being a legit number one goalie in the league either. I think I’d pass on this one.

BaggedMilk:

I would do that for the simple fact that I don’t see any of those players in the Oilers’ plans going forward.

Zach Laing:

I think this is fair value, but do the Oilers take the risk? They essentially move out three pieces that won’t be in the Oilers’ plans for the future and a 2nd round pick. I’m not as high on Georgiev as some.
